Although Dr. Foley's office does not directly offer orthodontic services, we work closely with many of the area's leading orthodontic dental practices and stay abreast of many of the latest developments in orthodontics.

Have you heard about the new invisible braces? These clear plastic "aligners", manufactured with sophisticated computer technology, help straighten teeth, rather than wire-and-bracket braces.

Do they work? Yes, they do. And besides being practically invisible, their computer-designed precision enables them to move teeth more efficiently and comfortably than conventional wires and brackets. The average treatment time for patients with invisible braces is twelve months.

Invisible braces are not, however, a complete replacement for conventional braces. They cannot move teeth that aren't fully erupted yet. They are not good for severe crowding. There are other situations where the best way to move the teeth is with conventional braces. But, because they are invisible, comfortable, and fast, patients love them. Invisible braces are particular favorites with adults and older teenagers.

On the other hand, for minor tooth correction, removable braces are also an option. Removable braces can be used to get a significant change in a short period of time. Unlike conventional braces, which apply pressure by being attached directly to the teeth, removable braces are used in different ways. Some are intended to influence growth of the jaws to effect changes in facial structure. Some are used to keep teeth in corrected positions. Removable braces are also used before and in combination with conventional braces. Most often, removable braces are worn full time except when brushing. Generally, removable braces are cheaper than fixed braces because the procedure requires shorter and fewer visits to the orthodontist.
